India Responds to Nepal PM Balendra Shah’s Border Remarks, Reaffirms Bilateral Resolution and Rejects Third-Party Role

Kathmandu, June 2 India has officially responded to recent remarks made by Nepal Prime Minister Balendra Shah regarding the Nepal–India border issue, reiterating that all unresolved boundary matters should be settled through bilateral dialogue and emphasizing that there is no role for any third party in the dispute.

The statement was issued on Tuesday by India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), following controversy sparked by Prime Minister Shah’s comments in Nepal’s Parliament and the subsequent clarification released by Nepal’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said India had taken note of both the Prime Minister’s remarks and Nepal’s official clarification.

According to the Indian government, nearly 98 percent of the Nepal–India border has already been demarcated, while only a few sections remain unresolved.

Jaiswal noted that changes in the course of the Gandak River have contributed to some boundary-related complications. He also mentioned that cases involving cross-border occupation and encroachment of no-man’s land in demarcated areas are currently being jointly mapped by both countries.

India further stressed that border issues between Nepal and India are strictly bilateral matters and should not involve any external parties.

“There is no role for third parties in a bilateral matter between Nepal and India,” the MEA spokesperson stated.

The remark is seen as a response to Prime Minister Shah’s recent statement suggesting that Nepal had also approached the United Kingdom regarding historical aspects of the border issue.

The controversy began on Sunday when Prime Minister Shah, during his first parliamentary appearance since assuming office, stated that Nepal had not only faced territorial encroachment from India but had also encroached on Indian territory in certain areas.

The statement immediately triggered political debate in Nepal, with opposition parties, former foreign ministers, and diplomatic experts demanding clarification and evidence to support the claim.

In response to growing criticism, Nepal’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs later clarified that Nepal’s long-standing position remains unchanged and that all outstanding border issues with India should be resolved through established diplomatic channels and mutual dialogue.

The Nepal–India border issue continues to be one of the most sensitive topics in bilateral relations, particularly concerning the disputed territories of Kalapani, Lipulekh, and Limpiyadhura, which Nepal claims as part of its sovereign territory.
