Former minister Chiranjivi Wagle released from jail

– The Kathmandu District Court had sent him to jail one day after the apex court verdict convicting him in a graft charge. Besides the jail term and fine, Rs 2.03 million property he had accumulated illegally had been confiscated.

 

Kathmandu, Nepal – Chiranjivi Wagle, the former minister who was convicted on corruption charges has been released from Dillibazaar jail after completing his term on Sunday.

Supreme Court had charged Wagle one-and-a-half jail term and penalty of Rs 20.3 million in February, 2011.

Wagle surrendered himself before the court after being convicted. His penalty was reduced by 20 percent. As per legal provisions, if a convict surrenders to the authority within 60 days of the court verdict, he is entitled to a 20 percent cutback on the jail term and penalty.

Wagle had become the first former minister to be sent to jail after being convicted of graft in February, 2011.
