Leaders agree to include “or” on citizenship provision

Top leaders of the top four parties today agreed to include the provision to issue citizenship by descent in the name of father or mother in the new constitution.
The ‘and’ provision in the draft of the new constitution had made it mandatory for a child to have both Nepali parents to acquire citizenship by descent. Leaders decided to replace the ‘and’ with ‘or’ following feedback from several quarters including general public and pressure from women rights activists.
However, the actual details of the agreement are yet to come.
As per Nepal’s Interim Constitution of 2007, a Nepali can acquire citizenship in the name of both father and mother. SETOPATI
